UNHCR Spokesperson in Washington
Brian Hansford is the Senior Public Information Officer for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Washington D.C. and has spent over 25 years working in emergency, conflict, development and headquarters roles. Since arriving in Washington in April 2013, Mr. Hansford has also been on emergency missions for UNHCR in Lebanon and Kenya. Prior to his assignment in Washington, Mr. Hansford was based in Afghanistan where he spent over two and a half years working with the United Nations Assistance Mission and the UN Development Programme. Mr. Hansford first worked with refugees in 1989 while with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) at a UNHCR-run camp for Cambodians in Thailand. He has extensive global experience with the UN over the past 12 years, and before that was a foreign correspondent with Reuters, the BBC and other international media. Mr. Hansford was seconded from UNHCR to the Office of the UN Special Envoy for Syria earlier this year to support the Special Envoy’s efforts to end the Syrian conflict. He has a Bachelor’s degree in International Politics and Strategic Studies, a Master’s Degree from the University of London and a Postgraduate Diploma from the University of Wales, Cardiff, UK.
