Senior Coordinator & Technical Specialist for Shelter, Settlements, and DDR
Hilmi has broad experience in humanitarian response in natural disasters, conflicts, and complex emergencies. Currently, he is managing the humanitarian Shelter and Settlement working group and Disaster Risk Reduction working group at InterAction, to collectively improve the collaboration, capacity, practice and policies on behalf of stakeholders who respond to humanitarian disasters and crises. Previously, he has worked for UN Agencies and INGOs in complex humanitarian emergencies and development programs. He has responded to emergencies such as the conflict and famine in Somalia, Rwanda post-genocide refugee crisis in Tanzania, Asian tsunami in Sri Lanka, cyclone Sidr in Bangladesh, earthquakes and conflicts in Haiti, Eretria, Yemen, Lebanon, Pakistan, and Sudan as well as conducted assessments in South East Asia. He has also managed several large infrastructure and reconstruction programs in the MENA region. In the private sector, he has worked for Shell Petroleum in Singapore and with SAIC on a USG chemical demilitarization program under the UN CWC treaty. He has a ME from University of Canterbury, New Zealand and a BE from University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka specializing in Engineering and Project Management Systems.
